Multi-use

RCS glossary

Multi-use is one of the four use-case types an RCS Business Messaging agent is registered under, alongside OTP, transactional and promotional. A multi-use agent may send both transactional messages, such as order updates and appointment reminders, and promotional messages, such as offers, from one verified identity. The one thing it may not send is one-time passcodes, which stay on a dedicated OTP agent.

Why the type matters

The use case is declared when the agent is created and is checked at carrier verification, so it is a commitment about what the agent will send rather than a label. A promotional agent that starts sending passcodes, or a transactional agent that starts sending offers, is outside its declared use and risks the agent's approval. Multi-use exists so a brand with both kinds of traffic does not have to choose.

The trade-off

Convenience against control. With one multi-use agent, a customer who opts out of marketing may also stop receiving the transactional messages sent from the same identity, unless your platform manages preferences below the agent level. Many programmes therefore run a transactional agent and a promotional one, so a marketing opt-out never silences a bill or a reminder. What is an RBM agent explains the record behind the choice.

Not the same as a mixed 10DLC campaign

10DLC has its own "mixed" and "low-volume mixed" campaign types on the SMS side, with their own monthly fees on the rate card. A multi-use RCS agent and a mixed 10DLC campaign are separate registrations, and a programme that sends both channels usually files both.
