What is Universal Profile?

Technical RCS & Developers

Quick answer. The RCS Universal Profile is the GSMA’s single, industry-agreed specification that defines how RCS works, so the standard is interoperable across different carriers, devices, and messaging apps. Without it, each operator’s RCS could behave differently; with it, features like rich cards, read receipts, and typing indicators work consistently. The profile has advanced through versions — Universal Profile 3.0 (March 2025) added end-to-end encryption via the MLS protocol, and Universal Profile 4.0 was finalized in March 2026.

Think of Universal Profile as the contract that keeps RCS from fragmenting: it specifies the feature set and technical enablers every compliant implementation must support. Newer versions add capabilities (E2EE in 3.0) and refinements (4.0), though carrier and device rollout of each version takes time.
